About the Role
OpenAI is hiring a senior backend engineer for its API Agents team. The role focuses on building shared agent harness, tools, and infrastructure that power long-running workflows across products. You will design reliable services for agent context, tool use, memory, multi-agent orchestration, and safe execution. This is systems engineering rather than model training, requiring strong backend fundamentals and product judgment.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate the shared agent harness and backend infrastructure
- Build reusable capabilities for search, context, computer use, memory, tool execution, delegation, and multi-agent orchestration
- Establish foundations for secure production, including identity, permissions, observability, and reliability
- Partner with Research, Codex, infrastructure, and applied product teams to translate model progress into production primitives
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional backend, infrastructure, or platform engineering experience
- Exceptional backend fundamentals and track record leading complex systems
- Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar
- Strong systems design across distributed systems, APIs, workflow orchestration, and storage
- Infrastructure depth paired with product judgment
- High agency and comfort in fast-moving environments
