OpenAI is seeking a Research Engineer/Scientist to join the Future of Computing Research team to work on RLHF and post-training for personalized, multimodal AI systems. The role focuses on building learning and evaluation foundations for context-aware, adaptive models, including reward modeling, preference learning, and long-horizon evaluation. Success is measured by improved model behavior in real-world user settings.

• Develop RLHF and post-training methods for multimodal models. Build reward models and preference-learning pipelines. Design datasets, rubrics, and evaluation frameworks. Run experiments on policy improvement. Work on long-horizon evaluation problems. Collaborate with safety researchers. Prototype training recipes and data pipelines. Help define success metrics for personalized AI.

• Strong background in ML research with experience in RLHF, reward modeling, preference optimization, or post-training for large models. Experience in reinforcement learning, ranking, recommender systems, personalization, memory, or human-in-the-loop evaluation. Ability to design clean experiments and reliable evals. Experience building datasets or eval pipelines grounded in human preferences. Comfortable working across the stack from data generation to training runs. Interest in multimodal AI and product-shaping research.
