OpenAI’s Application Engineering team is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to build the platform foundation that enables teams to create and deploy AI agents securely, with Slack as the first major implementation surface. You will own architecture across APIs, integrations, governance, and lifecycle automation, establishing reusable patterns for identity, permissions, and observability. The role combines deep backend and distributed-systems work with close partnership across IT, Security, Privacy, and product teams.
Responsibilities
Own technical strategy and architecture for building, connecting, and deploying agents safely, starting with Slack.
Design and build secure, permission-aware services for agent access to context, tools, and actions.
Develop reusable SDKs, connectors, templates, testing tools, and deployment patterns.
Build policy-aware automation and lifecycle management, including ownership, permissions, approvals, credential rotation, and decommissioning.
Implement governance and observability that enforce least privilege and provide visibility into agent behavior and data access.
Partner with IT, Security, Privacy, Legal, and product teams to shape technical direction and influence roadmaps.
Requirements
Deep hands-on software engineering experience and a track record of building and operating production systems at scale.
Strong backend and distributed-systems fundamentals, including API design, integrations, and production reliability.
