Principal Software Engineer – AI Data Engine

Motional is seeking a Principal/Staff Software Engineer to technically anchor its new AI Data Engine team. The role will drive technical strategy and architecture for ML dataset generation and data warehouse stacks, mentor a high-performing engineering team, and collaborate with ML research and data engineering teams. This hands-on individual contributor position focuses on scalable data systems, agentic AI workflows, and large-scale multimodal data management.

• Serve as technical anchor for a high-performing team of data and infrastructure engineers building Motional's Data Stack
• Define and execute technical vision and architecture for storing metrics and generating ML datasets for large computer vision and behavioral models
• Evaluate and prototype technologies to speed up data loaders, metric ingestion, and large-scale dataset querying
• Collaborate with ML research, ML training platform, and data engineering teams to integrate scalable architectures

• BS or MS in Computer Science or related field
• 6+ years of professional experience in data platform engineering
• 3+ years in a technical lead, staff engineer, or senior architecture role
• Experience managing petabyte-plus scale data platforms such as data warehouses, object storage, and ML training data stores
• Experience with workflow orchestration frameworks such as Airflow or Step Functions
