Anthropic is seeking a Senior Research Engineer to join the ML Performance and Scaling team in London. This role focuses on training frontier large language models at scale, requiring deep expertise in distributed systems, hardware debugging, and performance optimization. The position sits at the intersection of research and engineering, demanding high operational reliability during model launches.
Responsibilities
- Own critical aspects of the production pretraining pipeline including model operations and observability
- Debug and resolve complex issues across the full stack from hardware errors to training dynamics
- Design and run experiments to improve training efficiency and reduce step time
- Respond to on-call incidents during model launches and coordinate cross-team solutions
- Build and maintain production logging, monitoring dashboards, and evaluation infrastructure
Requirements
- Hands-on experience training large language models or deep expertise with JAX, TPU, PyTorch, or large-scale distributed systems
- Ability to balance research and engineering work (approx. 50/50 split)
- Experience debugging complex, ambiguous problems across multiple layers of the stack
