Staff Backend Engineer role on WEX's North America Mobility Platform team, focused on architecting a next-generation Agentic AI Platform. You will design and deploy autonomous AI agents, MCP servers, and LLM-powered services for financial workflows, while building scalable backend systems in Java. The role includes driving technical design, mentoring engineers, and ensuring production reliability.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance object-oriented backend services
- Develop public REST APIs and internal gRPC APIs
- Design and build agentic AI systems, AI agents, and multi-agent architectures
- Integrate AI agents with APIs and enterprise data using Model Context Protocol (MCP)
- Build and optimize LLM-powered services using OpenAI APIs and LangChain
- Implement evaluation frameworks, observability, and guardrails for AI systems
- Conduct code reviews, mentor engineers, and drive engineering best practices
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering
- 8-10 years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong experience with Java and building scalable backend services
- Experience with distributed systems and production-grade LLM applications
