Gusto is seeking a Sr. Staff AI/ML Engineer to design, build, and scale the AI platform that powers intelligent agents for internal teams. This role involves developing core platform capabilities such as agent orchestration, RAG infrastructure, eval tooling, and model serving. As a Staff MLE, you will shape technical standards, drive architectural decisions, and mentor engineers across the organization.

• Design and build scalable platform services (agent orchestration, RAG pipelines, eval frameworks, model serving)
• Lead technical strategy and architecture for the AI platform
• Collaborate cross-functionally with app teams, PMs, and Designers
• Build, harden, and operate shared infrastructure for intelligent agents
• Stay current with AI/ML research and prototype new techniques
• Establish robust practices for validation, deployment, monitoring
• Communicate technical strategy to executives
• Mentor engineers across teams

• 12+ years building and deploying end-to-end AI/ML systems
• Deep expertise in LLMs, NLP, retrieval/RAG, agent orchestration, deep learning, or reinforcement learning
• Hands-on experience with LLM-based applications and agentic workflows
• Proficiency with PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure)
• Strong Python skills and software engineering fundamentals
• Proven track record shipping impactful AI/ML projects to production

• Ph.D. or Master's in CS, ML, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field
