Perplexity is seeking an Internship - Machine Learning Research Engineer to join their Berlin office for a 12-24 week full-time program. The role focuses on advancing search quality through deep learning model optimization, representation learning research, and RAG pipeline development. Responsibilities
- Train and optimize large-scale deep learning models using PyTorch and distributed training techniques like DeepSpeed and FSDP
- Conduct research in representation learning, including contrastive learning and multimodal modeling for search
- Build and optimize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines for grounding and answer generation
- Push search quality forward through improvements in models, data, and tools
Requirements
- Strong proficiency with PyTorch and experience in distributed training performance optimization
- Understanding of search and retrieval systems, including quality evaluation principles
- Interest in representation learning, vector representations, and cross-lingual alignment
- Publication record in AI/ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL)
