Waymo is hiring a System Safety Engineer in Los Angeles to help safeguard its fully autonomous ride-hail service and the Waymo Driver. In this hybrid role, you will lead cross-functional safety analyses, assess qualitative and quantitative risks, and shape safety requirements that inform hardware, software, and operations design. You will also champion safety standards, regulatory compliance, and the continued improvement of Waymo's System Safety processes and culture.
Responsibilities
- Lead cross-functional efforts to perform safety analyses, identify hazards and their causes, and assess safety risks qualitatively and quantitatively
- Support the definition of safety requirements, inform design decisions, propose mitigations, and support verification strategies
- Participate in hardware, software, and operations design and readiness reviews to ensure safety mitigations are addressed and effective in the field
- Provide guidance on adopting and adapting relevant safety standards and industry best practices, ensuring compliance with safety regulations
- Evaluate the continued effectiveness of implemented risk control strategies and support the identification of new hazards
- Provide leadership in defining, implementing, and improving System Safety processes while promoting Waymo's safety culture
- Lead the integration of the System Safety Methodology with other methodologies in the Waymo safety framework
