Waymo is seeking a PhD intern to join the Perception/Road Understanding team as an ML Engineer. You will design and build machine learning models for lane geometry and topology understanding, run experiments and training pipelines across vehicle sensor modalities, and collaborate with research and engineering teams. This is a hybrid onsite internship based in Mountain View, CA.
Responsibilities
- Design and build machine learning models for lane geometry and topology understanding
- Set up data pipelines and train neural networks across vehicle sensor modalities and map priors
- Run experiments with advanced training techniques
- Collaborate with research mentors and upstream/downstream engineering teams
- Evaluate downstream planning impact and package insights for publication or internal deployment
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Vision, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative discipline
- Strong programming proficiency in Python
- Experience with modern deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow)
- Hands-on experience designing, training, and debugging deep learning architectures for Computer Vision, 3D Perception, or Graph Neural Networks
