Gusto is hiring a Staff Engineer for its AI Developer Tools team to architect an AI-native development lifecycle. The role focuses on building multi-agent systems, RAG pipelines, and developer productivity tools to eliminate friction for engineers. You will drive technical leadership and collaborate across teams to scale AI infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Architect and scale AI core infrastructure integrating LLMs into developer workflows with autonomous agents and RAG.
Establish best practices for building with AI, including evaluation frameworks, guardrails, and cost optimization.
Partner with product engineering, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure AI tooling is scalable, compliant, and secure.
Identify and eliminate bottlenecks in the local-to-production lifecycle; maintain enterprise reliability of AI systems.
Monitor system health, diagnose integration issues, and mitigate model drift.
Requirements
8+ years of systems expertise with production-grade distributed software.
Proven AI production experience with prompt engineering, fine-tuning, RAG architectures, and multi-agent workflows.
Developer-first mindset with passion for developer experience and productivity.
