Senior / Staff Machine Learning Research Engineer

Calico seeks a Senior/Staff Machine Learning Research Engineer to lead ML research engineering for drug discovery. You will drive the engineering vision, optimize models on accelerators, and build evaluation frameworks to accelerate research impact.

• Drive engineering vision for ML models from research to production
• Architect solutions for asynchronous execution, hardware orchestration, and high-throughput data pipelines
• Build foundational libraries enforcing software engineering rigor
• Translate prototype models (diffusion networks, vision transformers, DNA sequence models) into optimized JAX/PyTorch code
• Design evaluation frameworks, benchmarks, and scientific workflow tools

• Strong intellectual curiosity for life sciences
• BS/MS with 7+ years or PhD with 4+ years of relevant ML software engineering experience
• Expertise in Python and JAX or PyTorch
• Hands-on experience building, training, or optimizing advanced ML architectures (transformers, diffusion networks, GNNs)
• Experience driving complex ML engineering projects from concept to production
• Willing to work onsite at least four days a week
