Ai2 is hiring a Senior Research Engineer to train flagship open-source models (OLMo, Molmo). You will own end-to-end delivery of large-scale multimodal and agentic AI systems while collaborating with world-class researchers. This role combines deep software engineering with cutting-edge ML research in a non-profit AI institute.
Responsibilities
Build and optimize infrastructure for LLM, multimodal, and agentic research, including training/inference pipelines, dataset curation, and large-scale preprocessing.
Design, train, and evaluate multimodal models (vision + language) and agentic workflows.
Scope and lead research projects, prioritizing experiments for highest impact.
Bridge cutting-edge research to production-quality products and contribute to open-source community.
Requirements
4+ years of ML infrastructure experience (data preprocessing, model training, evaluation, inference, deployment).
Experience with end-to-end model development (dataset construction, training, fine-tuning, evaluation, profiling, monitoring).
Familiarity with modern model architectures (LLMs, vision-language models, agentic systems).
Proficiency in Python and a major ML framework (PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow).
Familiarity with cloud and containerization (GCP, AWS, Docker).
The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2) is a non-profit scientific research institute founded in 2014 by Paul Allen. It conducts high-impact AI research and engineering, focusing on open models, data, robotics, and conservation to address global challenges.
