About the Role
SumUp is looking for a Senior Data Scientist/ML Engineer to join its Risk AI Engineering Squad in Berlin. You will build and operate production ML systems for transaction monitoring and financial crime detection, covering the full model lifecycle from data exploration and feature engineering to deployment and monitoring. This hybrid role combines strong software engineering with data science, focusing on reliable, explainable, and compliant ML in a high-stakes fintech environment.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve end-to-end batch training pipelines for transaction-monitoring models.
- Build reliable software around the model lifecycle: testing, CI/CD, versioning, deployment, monitoring, and rollback.
- Build, maintain, and improve ML models for transaction monitoring, balancing detection quality, operational efficiency, explainability, and regulatory expectations.
- Engineer features that reflect AML and fraud typologies and suspicious behaviours.
- Monitor drift and model health, run back-testing, and investigate performance changes.
- Produce model cards, technical documentation, and ML governance artefacts.
- Partner with AML/Fraud Operations, Product, and Engineering to turn ambiguous problems into clear technical plans.
Requirements
- Strong production Python engineering experience with automated testing, CI/CD, code review, versioning, and observability.
