About the Role

Checkr is building a data platform for safe and fair decisions, used by over 140,000 companies. They are hiring a Machine Learning Engineer to build and ship AI systems for background checks, including document processing, charge classification, entity resolution, and in-product intelligence. This role is in the central Data & ML team in San Francisco, focusing on production ML services.

Responsibilities

Build and deploy ML/AI services end-to-end: model code, API layer, monitoring, and tests.
Design with LLMs and APIs as building blocks in production systems, considering cost, latency, and quality.
Ship production software with solid OOP, error handling, and tests, following CI/CD practices.
Partner with product and engineering to translate business problems into ML solutions and define API contracts.
Evaluate and iterate fast using evaluation frameworks and data-driven decisions.
Ship AI-powered workflows and contribute to Checkr's agentic platform.

Requirements

4+ years building software professionally, with at least 2 years building production ML systems.
Strong Python fluency with clean, testable code and solid OOP instincts.
Hands-on experience using LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic) in production with prompt engineering, structured outputs, function calling.
Experience building and maintaining APIs and working with CI/CD pipelines.
